Colville, a principal city and seat of Stevens County, serves the Tri-County area that includes Stevens, Ferry and Pend Oreille counties. It's nestled in the northeast corner of Washington and is justly famous for its beautiful scenery. It's at the junction of US Highway 395 and State Highway 20, only 40 miles south of the Canadian border. Spokane is about 65 miles south and Seattle lies about
350 miles southwest.
Colville is more than just the name of a city. It is often used to describe the lands and communities that developed around the Columbia River. The area is also known as North Columbia
because of this River Connection. The
City of Colville
is the commerce focal point, and County seat of the area. Its name is taken from the man who ran the famed, London based,
Hudsons Bay Company
, Andrew Colvile, in recognition of the
Salmon Trade
, the industry source that birthed the economy of the area.
The Colville Washington area national and state forest land provide many public recreational uses such as horseback riding, cross country skiing, snowmobiling and hiking, etc. In addition, the national forest and state lands provide some of the best hunting around. Late fall sees a return to warmer temperatures for a brief period known as Indian Summer. The temperature ranges from cold arctic blasts in the January near or below 0 degrees Fahrenheit to August heat spells near 100 degrees. The growing season lasts from 110 to 130 days. Average annual rainfall is 20 inches, while during an average winter, 50-90 inches of snow my fall (the usual accumulation of snow on the ground averages 8-20 inches at any one time). Summers are usually characterized by warm, dry days, and cool nights.
The splendid valley locations rimmed by glorious mountains, sparkling lakes and abundant trees provide hunting, fishing, boating and swimming. Lake Roosevelt (Grand Coulee Dam backwaters) stretches 150 miles up the Columbia River and provides a place to enjoy water sports and great fishing.
